Lisa,
I had a severe kidney infection while pregnant with my son. It started when I was about 4 almost 5 months pregnant. First, I had some back pain which I attributed to being pregnant. But, I was barely showing yet, so it didn't make sense. Then the pain became SEVERE. One night I had to stay on my hands and knees to keep pressure off my back. I NEVER had a urinary track infection - the infection started in my ureter and went directly up to my kidney. It never went down to my bladder. As it turns out as my son was growing, he was pinching the ureter (tube that connects the kidney to the bladder) therefore waste could not drain properly and bacteria developed. The other symptom I had was some flu like symptoms. By the time I got to the hospital, my fever was up to 104.8. That is a key indicator of a kidney infection. If you develop a fever at all, contact your doctor immediately!!

Good luck! I hope I didn't frighten you or anyone else. Kidney infections are not really all that common.

Take care!!
