Kendra, My kids were not premature, but my sister's daughter was 5 weeks early. She was still a big baby and they confirmed my sisters due date as being correct. The dr.'s confirmed her prematurity also by skin folds/wrinkles? I'm not quite sure what that means....anyway, for her first year, she lagged behind about a month or so from what "typically developing" children her age were doing (even though there is a tremendous variation in what "typical" is), but she is now 2.5 and she talks full sentences, knows all her animals and sounds (I mean exotic animals too), nursery rhymes, ABC's, she reads some one word per page board books, and she comprehends reading on a 1st grade level. She is totally developmentally appropriate physically. She is very bright and is actually now considered to be way above average. Hope this helps.

: Would anyone be interested in sharing their experiences with the development of their premature child(ren)? I know all infants develop at different rates. My daughter just turned 5 months but my doctor told me to think of her as a 3 1/2 -4 month old. My daughter was 6 weeks early with no health problems except not strong enough to eat. She just starting smiling in Dec. and the past couple weeks rolling onto one side. Do they eventually 'catch up' with other children their age? My doctor so far mentioned that her first year she will be at least a month behind 'typical' development.
