I had similar problems with my son. He was a very poor sleeper day and night. He would fall asleep in my arms but when I put him down he would wake up. Also he wouldn't settle to sleep on his back -- I actually spent many nights with him sleeping on my chest.
We struggled with his sleeping problems for almost two months, I was so frustrated and at my wit's end. We eventually started putting him to sleep on his stomach (I know this is a very controversial topic) but we bought an Angelcare monitor which sounds an alarm if there is no movement for 20 seconds. Now he sleeps great!!!
