: I posted on this awhile back, about how DH drained my account. Anyways, things have still not changed, and we have now been seperated for about 3 weeks. (our 3rd anniversary is next week) At first he wanted counselling, and I told him to go ahead and book it, now 3 days later he dont want. To keep a long story short, I need help, I was strong at first, but now am starting to crack. I booked myself a counselling appt tonight. Im gonna go with or without him. I've made numerous sucide attempts (with pills, 3 years ago, and Im not doing that now I have a son to live for) but I wanna get the help before I feel like that again.
: My question is about depression. Is anyone on medication for depression, and if so what side effects do you suffer, any pro's or con's? Relapses? Is there any herbal remedies I could try first? I have heard of St. John's Wart, but dont know much about it. Im scared about the thought of suffering side effects from medication.

Hi Tina,

I am sorry to hear what you are going through. I suffered from postpartum depression not to the point of suicide attempts but it was very bad. I managed to get through it without medication. I would visit neighbors, call up friends, cousins whoever just to talk and get things off my find. I also tried hobbies to occupy my mind.

My husband and I are separated at the moment. My husband never thought I would leave him because all he had to do was cry and I would forgive him. Finally, I got the strength to tell him to leave. My leaving is what encouraged him to get some counseling. He is seeing a psychologist and going to anger managemnt classes. Have you tried booking an appointment for him instead of him booking it and then tell him you booked it and see what he has to say? If he won't go and is not willing to put any effort into this marriage, then there is really not much you will be able to do. A person can only improve if they feel it is necessary and if they are willing to.

In the meantime, I believe in taking antidepressant medications ONLY as a last resort meaning you have tried everything including seeing a psychologist. Antidepressants can have a lot of side effects like causing you to feel sleepy or have a reverse effect like making you feel hyper or crazy, they can be addicting, dry mouth, heart palpitations, sexual dysfunction, menstrual problems, twitching, confusion, etc., even in the mildest antidepressant form which is Zoloft. Also, I have found Zoloft not to be helpful in most patients.

First, try a psychologist, maybe some yoga or tai chii, talking to people, etc. If you still have thoughts of suicide, then take some medication. Also, make an appointment with a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. A psychistrist always wants to put a person on medication even for the mildest forms of depression.

I wish you well. Whenever you need to talk, I will be here for you.

Oh, almost forgot. I type medical reports for a well-known neurologist and just noticed today that he has been prescribing St. John's wort and vitamin E 2,000 international units for his patients with depression who have tried many things without success and found to be helpful. He just recently enrolled many patients in this double-blinded placebo control study. If you decide to take the vitamin E, you need to start slow meaning take 200 the 1st day, 400 the next, and work your way up because it can cause high blood pressure. Also, if you already have high blood pressure, don't recommend it.

Whether you decide to take these or not, I urge you to go see a psychologist.

Take care.
