Some studies I have read on this topic link the type of milk given in infancy (while bodily organs are still growing and maturing) with an increased the risk of heart disease in later life (usually over the age of 60 years). That and other reasons, is why cow's milk (being very high in salt)is not recommended until 12 months.

12 months is an age that it's felt children's kidneys mature enough to tolerate this level of salt and liver is mature enough to break down the protein in cow's milk, which is more difficult to break down than formula.(The protein has been partially broken down in formula). Although cow's milk will have no visiable effect on a child, it's possible it will effect a child in later life.
