Personally, I wouldn't use the crib for a time-out. They will begin to associate it as a bad place to be. So then bed times may become difficult. It's typical toddler behavior. As far as the screaming, I just ignore it. It seems to end quicker. They're not getting any attention from it so they see that it doesn't get them anywhere. They say a minute for each year of their age for time-outs. If it continues and can be harmful I smack hands. I'm very direct/firm about what is ok, what's not and why.
