Hi Bob,
This was a common practice used by our mothers and grandmothers. But I agree with Vanessa about this being more like toilet timing rather than training. When a child is truly ready for toilet training they will learn to master this skill within a matter of weeks, if not days. The trick is to wait until the child shows signs of being ready. Girls will generally show signs of readiness about 6 months earlier than a boy.
