Babies definately need to learn to entertain themselves. I've read that you can't spoil a baby younger than 6 months. It sounds like he's just very used to you holding him & enjoys the closeness. Maybe try a baby sling so he can be with you while you do things around the house. Slowly try to entertain him with toys & then let him explore them for short periods. With patience & time he will play on his own.
