: Hi, guys. I saw your messages about hunger.

: I gained a lot of weight in my third trimester--way too much, actually. Up until then, I had managed to keep it under control, but it took a lot of work--pregnancy aerobics, walking and eating fruit, veggies and yogurt and trying not to eat refined foods. I'd "slip up" every so often and pig out but all the working out, etc. seemed to keep it in check.

: However, during my third trimester I gained & gained & gained. I was so disappointed in myself. I felt (and looked) like a whale. I mean I was GROSS. I couldn't believe how much I gained. It seemed out of my control. Every time I'd eat a bite of ice cream, I swear I'd gain 3 lbs. I felt like a failure.

: However, since the birth, I have now lost 38 lbs. and Colin is only 14 days old. I'm not "dieting," per se. In fact, I've been eating one Klondike Bar a day b/c DH was good enough to get us some. :) I try to stay reasonable on my food, but I'm sure not eating like a bird or anything.

: I think there is a VERY GOOD REASON for hunger in the third trimester. Please don't listen to what those "I gained 5 lbs. during my pregnancy" people say (no offense to those people!). Don't look at the "pregnant" models on Motherhood Maternity or Maternity Gap who are 5-10 and have 18 inch thighs and tiny cute bellies that basically look like they just ate too large a meal. I think that your body will gain what it wants to gain. Much of it will be water. But some of it is going toward keeping your and the baby's metabolism going.

: Your babies are getting big, girls. They require more food. They are growing faster & faster right now. Your body is working on keeping both you & the baby warm/cool/regulated, which takes calories. Your blood volume has increased by a full third (that's a lot of blood!). The placenta has grown tremendously. There's a lot going on in there. If you're starving to death...eat. Once you're no longer pregnant, your body will begin to "let go" of its need to store fluids & fat, I promise! But right now that's what your body feels it needs to do. Don't starve. Eat something...try to make it healthy, but eat something. A lot of frequent small meals is a good idea. I definitely feel that what you're going through right now is natural.

: Hang in there,

: Mels...the girl who feels sorry for other women who are told they're gaining "too much" weight...I FEEL YOUR PAIN

: Thanks mels. I find the whole thing ironic myself and I guess that is my biggest confusion. You're right, the baby is bigger now and laying down fat, this would make me assume she needs more food not less. However, if she's gaining more weight and i eat the same or more, how can I not gain more weight than before? Anyway, most people think that I still look tiny for my dates but I have gained 17lbs and I measure the right size. I have also seen her on ultrasound 2 times and last time she already had chubby little cheeks. So cute! I try to eat when I am hungry. Lots of fruit mostly and I guess it's not me or DH that's concered about the weight so much, I don't want to get one of those lectures from the OB about gaining too much too quickly. Besides, DH thinks I need to grow a lot more and eat more and put on more weight anyway. "you're tummy is still so small" he always says. Bless him. However, from up here it doesn't look so small to me. lol. Anyway, babling on here, thanks again Mel.
