It sounds similar to ecxema, which our 4 year old use to get all the time. Detergent can DEFINITELY be the cause. Check your laundry and baby products. Also check all your household cleaners that could come into contact with baby skin. And be skeptical of ever product that gets near your baby. Johnson and Johnson products have formaldehyde in them. Look at the ingredients label. You will see an ingredient call quaternium-15. This is a formaldehyde releasing agent; once it comes in contact with water (also in the lotion/shampoo/bath gel) a reaction occurs and generates formadehyde. Quaternium-15 is not the only formaldehyde releasing agent they use. Why do the use it??? Because it is a CHEAP persevative. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen. It is a toxin. It is known to cause cronic ear infections, skin rashes and many other problems (says the American Lung Association.)

Also check your laudry products. Downy and some other softeners also contain skin irritants and toxins. Tide is a horrible detergent to use. Contains knows carcinogens and other harsh chemicals. Many baby detergents contain heavy fragrance that can irritate skin and lungs. Be very careful about what you use in your house. We use only the highest quality products from a company that guaruntees to NEVER use any toxin or cheap perservative. Contact me if you want more info.

BTW I am a chemist (soon to be full-time SAHM).
