My little boy Ethan had had eczema since he was about 1 month old...he is now 4 1/2 months old. We have tried everything...cutting milk, nuts, and eggs out of my diet, since I'm breast feeding, putting him on different formulas, and rubbing the cat and dog on him to see if it's a pet allergy. What we've determined is that it is just plain eczema...much like a geometric theory...there is no explaination...it just is. What I've been doing is wetting his skin, then applying moisturizer (Aveeno, Baby Naturals, or Vaseline Creamy), and then topping it all off with a layer of vaseline. I came to learn that moisturizers don't moisterize...they merely keep moisture in...so if the skin is already dry...you're beating a dead horse. I also just found out that the reason his face is soooo bad...weeping and red cracks...is because it has escalated to an infection. So now, he is on antibiotics to clear up the infection. Hopefully, he'll be feeling better really soon. One thing...everyone said only bathe him every 2-3 days because it will just make his skin drier...I am finding this to be incorrect...if you are covering him in lotion as soon as he is out of the bath and keeping him moisturized...it actually helps. Like I said...his skin has to be wet to get moist.
