My mother-in-law told me about this. When she was having babies (about 30 years ago) it was a common practice. Her OB told her if she was having pre-term contractions to have a drink (& I'm not talking a glass of wine - a cocktail!). She said with her third child she would have a drink in the evening when she was contracting prematurely. She even has a nun friend who worked as a nurse on the maternity floor of Catholic hospitals years ago. She remembers making pitchers of bloody marys for the mothers who were in pre-term labor.

With all the knowledge about how alcohol affects babies they don't do it anymore, but the medication they administer to women in pre-term labor has the same calming effects on the uterus.

Crazy, huh?
