: : I'm wondering if any of you would have some tips for training your baby to use a sippy cup. I give my son a sippy cup with juice or water at every meal. All he does is throw the thing. If I hold it up to his mouth he will put it in then as soon as he figures out it is not a bottle he pushes it away and tries to throw it again.

: : He was a preemie and had problems learning to suck when he was born. We got past that hurdle and he takes a bottle just fine now. Now the doctor wants me to train him to use a spill-proof sippy cup and to drink out of a straw. I can't get him to suck on a straw either, he just chews n it.

: : I would love any and all advice on this. I'm just at a loss as what to do at this point. Jonathan is 9.5 months right now. I didn't think babies took a sippy cup until a year but his doctor wants him to take it now. He wants us to be completely bottle free by 12 months.

: My toddlers were both born 1 month early. Both of my toddlers started drinking from a sippy cup at 5 months. I would hold it up for them and by 6 and 7 months they were holding it on their own. By 8 months, they did not like the bottle anymore and would just push the bottle away. You could alternate with a bottle and sippy cup even if he just chews on it. I am sure when he is ready he will stop chewing on the sippy cup. He could also be teething?

I started giving my daughter a sippy cup WITHOUT the spillproof valve. I wanted her to make the connection that something comes out of this weird thing. I would poor small amounts into her mouth with each meal and eventually she got it! Good luck!
