: Hopefully to shed some light on this topic.
: As a midwife I have to agree with Robin that symptoms of pregnancy are associated with the production of the hormone 'human chorionic gonadotropin' (hCG). This hormone only begins to be produced once the fertilized egg has implanted into the uterus (usually around 1 week post ovulation). Prior to that time the body does not know a pregnancy exists.
: Earlier symptoms of bloating, breast tenderness etc are often associated with the hormone 'progesterone' (which is responsible for preparing the uterus each month for the possiblity of a pregnancy) and not to the pregnancy itself.
: HOWEVER, I have also met many, many mothers who swear that they were aware they were pregnant from the time of fertilization. Although there is no medical evidence to support this at this time, there a many things that medical science can not explain and that doesn't mean that this is not possible.
