: : Charlie has had a cough for over a month. It seemed to ease up and turn into a dry hack for a while but he's sounds phlemy (sorry to be gross) now and rattely. He seems to be feeling fine otherwise. Can someone tell me what croup is and what the symptoms are. Or anything else it could be. I just can't figure out why he can't shake this cough.
: : Thanks
: You will know when he has croup. It is a barky cough and may sound like a seal at times. He would also have difficulty breathing. Also, you need to watch the color of the phlegmn whether it is yellow, yellowish-green, or clear. If it is clear, I would just give him over-the counter meds as long as he does not have a fever. If you take him to the doctor, that is what they will do also. If his phlegm is yellow, that could be a sign of bronchitis or bronchiolitis. If he worsens after over-the-counter meds and gets a fever, then I would take him to the doctor to do a throat culture to check for strept throat.
: Poor baby, I hope he feels better.
: My son had the same thing cough, phlemmy and raspy and he ended up having brochiolitis for 2-3months and was put on a nebulizer so you might want to call you doctor and make an appointment. Until then if you haven't already you might want to elevate him at night and put on a vaporizer so the air won't be so dry exspecially in this weather. So I know what your going through and I hope he gets better so try to hang in there.
