: I have a nephew that will be 2 in October and is not talking. I mean no "mama" or "dada"...NOTHING. I am very worried, and I am trying to get my sister-in-law to see a doctor but she keeps putting it off. Everyone tells her he will talk "in time". His way of communicating is pointing and saying UH-UH. He understands simple questions and directions, so I know he can hear very well. Am I being too paranoid? I have three kids of my own (10, 6, & 6 mos.)and they all talked at different times (of course), but I think this is a little too long.

Has he had any ear infections? My daughter had so many when she was real young that she didn't talk until after we had tubes put in her ears. Then she could finally hear everyone loud and clear! The dr said before she could hear, but not nearly as well. Her speech really took off after the tubes. We did find out afterwards that she had some partial hearing loss due to all the infections. I would encourage her to take him to an ENT. It can't hurt to have it checked!
