: : My son just turned a year and his doctor has asked if we want to get the meningits vaccine (Haemophilus b conjugate vaccine) for him as well as the Chickenpox vaccine. These are both optional and are not covered by our provincial Health Plan which is not an issue since my husband has a great drug plan with his employer.
: : I am more concerned with any side effects that he may experience with the meninigitis vaccine as it is fairly new I think.
: : Have any other parents had their babies vaccinated for Meningitis? If so, did your baby experience negative side effects and if not, why did you choose not to have your baby vaccinated?
: : Thanks

: Hello,

: Side effects are extremely rare and the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the side effects. The most common side effect is fever and pain at the injection site but if you give your child Tylenol or Advil 20 minutes before the vaccine and continue to give it to him for a few days, he should be okay. Not being vaccinated can cause some serious consequences in the long run. I would have your child vaccinated for those.

: Hope this helps.

Well, I feel a bit better hearing this from you. We have already booked him for an appt next month for the first needle, it's called Prevnar, the next meningitis needle he will get is called Menjugate, I think.
He just had his one year checkup on Friday and had his standard immunization that babies get at a year(I have to check his chart to see what it's for), but he is soooooo irritable the last two days, his forehead feels hot, he has a runny nose and everything is making him cry and he in not eating well. I am not sure if it is the after effect of his needle on Friday or his teeth or a combo because he is drooling excessively and chomping down on everything. He just cut his seventh tooth last week, so there may be another one on the way. We have been giving him Tylenol, but I just tried about half an hour ago before laying him down for a nap and he would not open his mouth for the dropper he just screamed, so I am at a real loss right now. All is quiet at the moment, because he is sleeping.
