Firstly, I don't think you are an idiot at all. These are all legitimate questions that we have all had at one stage or another. I know I have questions everyday that come up. I get my info from reading all sorts of things, my doctor, the internet, message boards and like you, I post my questions. So don't feel badly about wanting a little input from now and then it just makes you a better Mummy.
I would try and introduce the sippy cup as much as you can at this stage. My baby still (14 mos) has a bottle 2-3 times a day full of milk but thats it. The rest of the time I use the sippy and a regular cup.
As for the food. I really found a great book called. Super Baby foods. I used this as my bible. I never fed any jarred foods and this helped the transition on to regular table foods as you call it. I would start by giving your baby small bits at a time. If you put the whole plate down the reaction of the baby is to put everything in the mouth. Try putting only a bit down at a time. Maybe even one piece at a time. Try soft chunks of banana or mashed sweet potatoe rolled into balls.. this allows them the chance to eat for themselves. Bits of toast are good too. Slowly you can end up being able to cook 1 meal for the whole family! what a novelty eh? Stay away from too much spice as this can sometimes upset the unfamiliar baby.
