: Hello,

: My friend Krista had a baby this morning at about1:26 A.M. a little boy. Thing is she was in her 26th week. So the baby is a little early. I wanted to know if anyone has had a early baby and if her baby was going to be ok. He is 2pds. and 7oz. And she delivered him in about 7 hours is that usual?

: Thank you

Wow, so tiny. With all preemies there are risks.
One of the main concerns is the baby's lungs and inabilty to keep itself warm. He will probably be in the NICU for a while. And he will have a lot of tubes and wires attached to him. And there's a possibility he will need bili-light therapy for jaundice and a vent for assisted breathing. The extent of treatment depends on the how strong the baby is and how well at birth. Modern medicine has greatly increased preemies odds of survival. 26 weeks is early but babies are born a lot earlier than that and can survive. I know Duke University had a baby born at 22 weeks that survived. But there's a lot of hurdles to get over first. The new Mom will also need a lot of support. This will be tough for her, especially if the baby is hospitalized until her original due date. Best you can do right now is have faith, say a little prayer, and time will tell.
