: I am 25 years old and will be expecting my first child in Feb. My mother is extremely excited and wants me to use my crib from when I was a baby for my own child. This is fine and dandy, but she also insists that I use the original crib mattress with the crib which now at least 25+ years old.

: Is it safe to use a mattress that old for a young newborn. The crib and mattress were stored in the
: basement in the open air and not in storage bags. I am concerned about microbes and other bacteria that may be harboring inside the mattress that my newborn may inhale while sleeping on it. My mother did use a crib pad on the mattress and the mattress does appear to be in good shape, but I am still concerned. Is their a "life expectancy" for crib mattresses?

I am not too sure about the "life expectancy" on a crib mattress but I know I wouldn't use it. I don't mean to be all girlie and stuff but gross!!
A mattress tha told I would think would smell musty and the plastic would be ready to crack on it.
Thats just my opinion, good luck
