I read somewhere that when children are well rested during the day, they sleep better at night.
This may sound counterintuitive. I mean, as adults, if we nap during the day, it makes sense that we're less tired at night... but this is not true with kids. When they are very young (like your's) they need a LOT more sleep than we do. So, if you are trying to avoid naps during the day in order to make him more tired at night, you may be making things worse for yourself.
If he isn't already, try getting him to nap during the day, at least once. Also, you say he used to sleep through... what caused him to stop? How did you get him to do it before? Are you catering too much to him? Does he know that if he cries long enough, you'll get him?
Just some stuff to think about.
