Hi Kelly,

There are 2 types, simplex and genital. Simplex usually causes cold sores on the lips or in the mouth and genital causes sores the genital area and arms, back, chest, etc. It sounds to me like your friend gave it to her kids. You could only get herpes through others from sexual contact, kissing if the gums bleed. Sometimes when a mother has herpes, a C-section is performed instead of a normal delivery which can decrease the chances of spreading it to the baby.
