Pica is an unnatural craving to eat non-food items. Like sometimes pregnant women crave laundry starch or remember kids in school that ate glue, paper and chalk, etc ? Sometimes it is because of missing nutrients that they are craving and they have found an alternate way to deal with it. Sometimes it is behavioral and a sign of something else such as a developmental disability or a psychological disorder.
Ryan (my 2 1/2 year old was eating wood and lots of it. He was also eating foam (like the kind in furniture and pillows). I am relieved that his problem appears to be nutrient related and not something worse. They say sometimes Pica is a sign of schizophrenia, so you can see why diet is a much easier thing to adjust.
I hope this helps and thanks for being curious enough to learn about it Tracy. I was confused at first about it all too, but everyone here on the board was very helpful and supportive (especially Debbie and Steve, thanks again!) Take care
